The city of Kitchener held it’s annual athletic awards banquet Tuesday, March 8th at Bingeman’s Conference Centre. This annual event honours Kitchener athletes and teams who have brought home Provincial, National or International honours to the area.

Five KW Track and Field Association athletes were given awards last night for their accomplishments during the 2010 track and field season.

Members of the KWTFA Fastrack program, Christine Campbell, Jonathan Fury, Kiera Gibson and Megan O’Brien each had a spectacularly successful 2010 season.

Christine Campbell was honoured for winning the Athletics Canada Open Women discus throw tie-down and the Para Sport Ontario Open Women shot-put& discus throw tie-down.

Jonathan Fury was recognized for winning the Para Sport Ontario Open Men 400 m.

Kiera Gibson was given an award for winning the Para Sport Ontario Open Women shot-put tie down.

Megan O’Brien was honoured for winning the 100m, 200 m and 400 m events at Para Sport Ontario, the Ontario Summer Games and at the Canada summer games.

KWTFA Minor Track Association sprinter Joey Daniels was also recognized for winning the 100 m and 200 m in the 11/12 age group at the MTA Provincial Championships, and representing zone 1 (Ontario to Wisconsin) in the 200m at the Hershey North American Games, where he earned a bronze medal.

In addition to these athletes, coaches Cheryl Bowman (MTA), Natasha Lane and Dave Greig (Fastrack) were recognized for their hard work, dedication and undying support of these athletes.

KWTFA would like to publicly congratulate all of our champions, and thank the City of Kitchener for the wonderful dinner in honour of all of the local athletes that have put our City’s name at the top of podiums around the Province and beyond. We can truly take pride in living in a city where sport is an integral part of our cultural fibre. With the ongoing support that our athletes receive from the City, the list of champions will continue to grow as time goes on.
