Our organization isn't just a place to run and train... it's a place of positive energy and camaraderie.
KWTFA is the oldest established track and field club in the Region of Waterloo. In January of 2014 we celebrated our 50th year of athletic training. We are a not for profit minor sport association affiliated with the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo. Both cities contribute finances to offset the cost of running our programs. Programs are available to any athlete starting at grade 6.
The primary objective of the club is to give each athlete a positive experience in sport by providing them an opportunity to develop their individual talents and athletic skills. Our coaches have a progressive approach to athletic development which allows young people to achieve their athletic goals in a positive, encouraging environment. This community based non-elitist approach has provided us and our athletes with short and long term results that are well renowned.
Our Club is run by a duly elected Board of Directors and governed by a constitution.
Our instructors love what they do, and it shows. Each one is certified in their field, and regularly attends (or leads!) practices and drills with effective techniques.

Chad has always had a passion for sports and athletics. Chad is a Level 1 NCCP Multi-Sport coach. He is Club Coach trained in Sprints and Hurdles. Chad is also trained in Run, Jump, Throw wheel.
Excelling in both Football and Track, Chad received many awards and was his high school track & field MVP. Chad joined KWTFA half way through high school and really benefited from the coaching of Brent McFarlane and staff. As a former KW track athlete, Chad is dedicated to developing young athletes and helping build upon their goals.
Specializing in jumps and sprints, Chad has a great understanding that both events need each other to be successful. Chad’s unique coaching style blends his passion for athletics while driving performance standards.
Brent McFarlane has coached more than thirty Canadian national teams, and he has coached on four Canadian Olympic teams, including serving as Canada’s Head Coach for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
McFarlane has been a volunteer coach in Waterloo County for more than 38 years with the K-W Track & Field Association. Athletes from his training groups have established: 22 Canadian Records, 38 Provincial Records, 40 National Champions, 185 Ontario Champions (includes 52 OFSSA High School Champions). 43 Waterloo County athletes have been on Canadian National Teams. In 2002 he received the first annual ‘Special Recognition Award’ from the Big Brothers of Kitchener–Waterloo for his contribution to local sport and athletes in the K-W community. He was honoured in 2004 for his volunteer service with the ‘Waterloo Award’ by the City of Waterloo. In 2006 he was named to the Waterloo County Hall of Fame as a community builder.
Unfortunately, we lost Brent on April 2, 2019. However, we continue to embody the same passion and pursuit of excellence he instilled in all of his former athletes and mentor coaches.
